Anemia is a significant public health concern, primarily impacting young children, pregnant and postpartum women, and menstruating adolescent girls and women. The burden of anemia is highest in low- and lower-middle-income countries, particularly among rural populations, poorer households, and individuals with no formal education. Globally, around 40% of children aged 6–59 months, 37% of pregnant women, and 30% of women aged 15–49 are affected by anemia. In 2019, anemia resulted in the loss of 50 million years of healthy life due to disability. The main causes include dietary iron deficiency, thalassemia and sickle cell trait, and malaria.
