Calcium and Vitamin D are essential elements for bone health across life, with bones storing 99% of the body's calcium. Proper consumption of these nutrients promotes healthy bones and lowers the incidence of fractures, particularly in the elderly, who are predisposed to osteoporosis.
Dairy, green leafy vegetables, and calcium-fortified meals are all good sources of calcium. To reach their daily calcium need of 1000-1200 mg, the elderly may require supplements.
Vitamin D is a hormone that improves calcium absorption and muscular function. Sunlight promotes its creation, and supplements become necessary when vitamin D synthesis declines with age. In the aged, the appropriate balance of calcium and vitamin D helps to preserve bone density and decreases fracture risk.
