These awards are specifically designed to empower talented scientists from underrepresented minority groups and promote a diverse community of researchers and clinicians in the field of lupus.

People of color face a higher burden from lupus—an autoimmune disorder that causes debilitating effects—experiencing greater prevalence, more severe symptoms, and increased mortality rates. Shockingly, a recent report by the National Science Foundation revealed that underrepresented minorities constitute only 23% of the scientific workforce, despite comprising 30% of the overall employed population.
